POST 1 INTRODUCTION - MARYANA S.

 POST 1 INTRODUCTION: Maryana Soto

Self portrait, 2023 Illustrator

My name is Maryana, and I’m a graphic design student passionate about storytelling through design. My work often explores the unique connection between humans and animals, also about peruvian culture. I enjoy experimenting with dynamic layouts and bold compositions to communicate meaningful narratives that feel both engaging and approachable.

One of the artists whose work I have been investigating lately is Paula Scher, a graphic designer and painter. Her works are known for their bold, dynamic compositions and playful visual narrative. These are styles I would like to experiment with more in my own work and will draw inspiration for future work.
I am inspired by Paula Scher’s fearless approach to design and her ability to transform complex ideas into powerful visuals. Her work with typography and large-scale design projects encourages me to be bolder and more expressive in my own work.
Social issues such as animal rights and environmental awareness also influence my creative choices. I strive to use design as a tool to foster empathy for animals and challenge perceptions about lesser-known pets, such as ferrets. Like Scher, who uses design to engage audiences on deeper levels, I want my work to spark curiosity and encourage people to see everyday things like animals and our relationship with them in a new light.

 Quote 1

"to democratize all experiences by translating them into images."

Quote 2

"Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it."

Susan Sontag’s ideas about imagery resonate deeply with my approach to art, particularly in how I seek to communicate and democratize experiences. Her statement that photographs “democratize all experiences by translating them into images” highlights the transformative power of visuals to make niche or overlooked subjects relatable. Through my artwork, I aim to create spaces where viewers can connect with themes and subjects that might otherwise be unfamiliar or misunderstood. By visually narrating these moments, I strive to bridge gaps in understanding and spark a deeper emotional engagement.

Sontag’s assertion that “photographs furnish evidence” underscores the importance of visual representation in validating experiences or ideas that might otherwise be doubted. This perspective informs my creative process, as I often aim to capture and present tangible “evidence” of the beauty, complexity, and emotional resonance of my subjects. Through thoughtfully crafted visuals, I seek to challenge preconceived notions and offer viewers new perspectives. My work, whether it focuses on the human-animal bond, personal experiences, or societal themes, is driven by this desire to present visual narratives that invite curiosity, empathy, and reflection.
