Post 2- Francis Troy

1-Who are the 5+ artists you chose?

  • The  five artists I chose were

    • Jamie Hewlett, Co-creator of the Gorillaz

    • Wong Ping, an animator who lives and works in Hong Kong

    • Cindy Sherman, an artist known for her photographs and self-portraits

    • Barbara Kruger, American Collage and conceptual artist

    • Andrea Zittel, An installation artist uses objects to explore how to live

2-What were 5+ themes the artists addressed about making work?

  • Five themes the artist addressed were

    • Jamie Hewlett explored themes in creating unique worlds, self-expression, and curating curiosity

    • Wong Ping's themes are explored through absurdity, loneliness, and unfulfilled desires.

    • Cindy Sherman’s themes explore identity, representation, gender construction, and how femininity is viewed by societal norms

    • Barbara Kruger’s themes address power, consumerism, and gender identity, and how they interact with social conventions

    • Andrea Zittel’s themes are most explored in human value and perception, and how her crocheting plays into liberation in concerns to wardrobe and containers

3-What were the 5+ challenges the artists faced in making their work?

  • Challenges that Jamie Hewlett faced were a large amount of anti-social hours spent at his desk when animation and illustrating, and how laborious it can be

  • Challenges Wong Ping faced were finding himself in a world that did not seem to cater to his strengths, his bad grades in school alienated him, which eventually was shown through his art in works that would make critique and comic of disturbing narratives derived from Ping’s life

  • Cindy Sherman’s challenges seem to rest in obstacles pertaining to technical difficulties, overt shyness, and the limitations of technical perfection

  • Barbara Kruger’s challenges lay in the expectations society places on her, serving as obstacles in the art market due to traditional gender roles

  • Challenges faced by Andrea Zittel were in the art world structure of the prevailing idea of needing permission of validation to create, or continue working on pieces and artworks. Many artists are stifled from needing validation to make.

4-What were 5+ inspirations you drew from the artists?

  • Inspiration I received from Jamie Hewlett was his creative usage of 2-d and 3-d animation, along with using real-life camera footage to add more spice to his animations in conjunction with his music

  • Inspiration I got from Wong Ping to truly take in everyday interactions, and how they can inform your art process

  • Cindy Sherman has laid inspiration in how cinema can help you find a way to create art through performance and cinematography

  • Barbara Kruger has given me inspiration in how one can confront social issues in a powerful manner through bold art creation

  • Andrea Zittel showed that people use their adversary and conflict to create meaningful, engaging works that speak to and empower others

5-What were 5+ things you would like to incorporate into your own work after watching these videos?

  • I wish to incorporate Jamie Hewlett’s usage of different mediums and sense of rhythm into my art

  • Wong Ping’s ability to refer to everyday happenings is a good thing to incorporate into one's work and is something I will consider in the future.

  • Cindy Sherman has inspired me to take a look at various performances and classical cinema, to see how I can derive from that work to inform my own works

  • Barbara Kruger has shown me that I can use issues in my life to empower myself and my art and shed light on things that normally would be dormant and unnoticed.

  • Andrea Zittel has shown that one can use one's work and voice in the world to help uplift others, even if you do not know the direct impact.
