The five artists I chose were Zanele Muholi, Theaster Gates, Pierre Huyghe, Sarah Sze
2-What were 5+ themes the artists addressed about making work?
- Muholi's theme is about South African LGBTI history.
- Gates' theme is about various collections acquired that represent things that were important to someone.
- Huyghe's theme is about a character called "Anlee" whom he bought the copyright of and gives to different artists to tell their own narratives through.
- Sze's theme is about how we move through space.
3-What were 5+ challenges the artists faced in making their work?
- Muholi faced the limitations of a studio, as it couldn't replicate the natural space that was comfortable for the participants.
- Gates faced showcasing the visibility of black people.
- Huyghe faced that Anlee wasn't the perfect blank slate to begin with.
- Sze went through a ten-year process with a huge amount of tiles and very technical installation.
4-What were 5+ inspirations you drew from the artists?
- Muholi- Taking models/participants to the exhibitions featuring works that include them and giving a chance for viewers to ask them questions.
- Gates- Obtaining a collection from someone else about a specific subject matter that I am also interested in.
- Huyghe- Having a character that others could potentially tell their own narratives through.
- Sze- The commitment to creating artworks that have the process spanning over several years.
5-What were 5+ things you would like to incorporate into your own work after watching these videos?
- Muholi- Working outside and letting the natural setting as a background influence the tone of my work.
- Gates- Creating artwork out of something not originally intended for that purpose.
- Huyghe- Take the base design of a character and give it to another artist to see how they utilize it.
- Sze- Create multiple pieces that are installed separately in different locations within a specific area but all correlate to each other in design.
