The 5 artists I choose
1. Cecily Brown
2. Inka Essenhigh
3. Chiharu Shiota
4. Claude Monet
5. Tomo Takeuchi
Themes the artists addressed
1. Cecily Brown's work addresses many themes, such as mortality, desire, and the subversion of tradition. She explores these themes through her paintings, using bold brushstrokes and blending abstraction and figuration.
2. Inka Essenhigh's work is mainly surrealist. She reinterprets femininity from a contemporary perspective. She creates huge landscape pieces that include folklore and mythology. She primarily works in oil paint, as she associates it with deeper emotions.
3. Chiharu Shiota's work explores themes of memory, connection, migration, and home. She creates large-scale installations using string to create an experience of human connection. She also uses yarn and selects specific colors. For example, she uses red yarn because it resembles blood, the body, and human relationships. The white yarn is pure, which is connected to death and blank space.
4. Claude Monet's work is mainly about nature, light and water. He was a leader of the impressionist movement in France. While he painted landscapes and leisure activities in Paris he also worked on capturing the effects of sunlight on the landscapes. His paintings depict a feeling or sensation of a scene.
5. Tomo Takeuchi's work focuses on the themes of personal growth and self-discovery. He is a manga artist who showcases the challenges of pushing through limits to reach new heights. He captures the passion and dedication in all of his characters and brings it to life.
Challenges the Artists Faced
1. Cecily Brown has faced criticism, although many people praise her many others criticize her use of sensual and sexual imagery. She has also had the issue of being taken seriously, as a figurative painter she blends abstract and figurative elements. It was tricky for her to appeal to both fans of abstract art and those who prefer the figurative elements.
2. Inka Essenhigh faced the issue of breaking away from early expectations, she blew up in the art world due to her distinctive style of vibrant and cartoonish figures and fantastical worlds. As time went by her style evolved, and she wanted to stray away from the expectations set by her earlier work.
3. Chiharu Shiota's work is known for its large, intricate installations. One challenge she faced was the significant amount of space and materials she would need for these large installations. Creating and maintaining these installations is tiring, and it involves coordination with a considerable amount of time. She also faces the challenge of sustainability, as most of her work uses yarn, fabric, and other materials that can degrade over time.
4. Claude Monet faced financial struggles as he had to support a large family and suffered the loss of his wife. He was a struggling painter, and he relied on the support of his friends to help him promote his work. Monet was one of the leaders of the first impressionist group, he received harsh criticism from the public and art critics. His work was mocked and ridiculed, many art critics dismissed his work as it was "unfinished" or "too abstract."
5. Tomo Takeuchi has faced the challenge of establishing a unique identity in a highly competitive manga industry. Like many other manga artists, he has also faced the challenge of balancing both the responsibility of the artwork and the storytelling. He had to study dance closely and find ways to capture the movement in his manga without losing the sense of motion and grace.
Inspirations I drew from the Artists1. Cecily Brown incorporates bold choices of color and conveys intense emotions through her brushwork. I would like to incorporate bold colors and be able to blend them the way she does. What really inspired me and motivated me to keep learning more about her and her artwork was the vanitas in her work.
2. Inka Essenhigh's work is massive and she creates surreal paintings that are so colorful and smooth looking. She can do these massive paintings and curate a whole collection that pairs so well together. What I really like about her is the way she talks about her paintings. The way she can connect to each piece and explain her choices.
3. Chiharu Shiota has huge installations and really connects with the people. What really inspired me was her usage of thread, I enjoy reading about the Red String Theory and how everyone connects. I also liked her work where she included keys and these keys came from all over the world and how each key opens a door to somewhere.
4. Claude Monet is a famous impressionist, what inspired me was his work of his wife holding a parasol up a hill. I felt like he was really capturing that moment and you can feel the emotion in that painting.
5. Tomo Takeuchi I picked up his manga just for fun and was really impressed by the art and the motion on each page. I felt like characters were popping out of each page. He put a lot of time and effort into each character and his consistency throughout the series was really impressive.
Things to incorporate into my own work
