Post 3: Reading and Interviews - Pedro Jimenez

- Who was your most important teacher ?

During high school, since I moved here during sophomore year, I never got the chance to be in any art program or classes but I remember during my senior year I got to finally be in one of those art elective classes, and this one professor liked my drawings and made me use the drawing iPad all the time, it was my first instance of doing digital artwork and I truly enjoyed it.

- What is your favorite Museum?

I've been to a good handful of museums, but the one I like the most currently it was the American Museum of Natural History, I loved the installations and the exhibitions they had going on. My favorite part of this museum was the insect's area, the whole ceiling looked like an ant farm, it was a really nice experience.

- What advice would you give to an aspiring artist?

As someone who is still learning and trying to improve every day, never be scared to fail. There is learning improvement from trial and error, and constant teaching moments from those times.

- Is there an experience that influenced become an artist?

My earliest experience becoming an artist was from my childhood, I remember watching cartoons all the time and was so mesmerized by the animation. Shows like Camp Lazlo, cow and chicken, the emperor’s new groove, etc... but the show that I vividly remember watching and doing fanart of was Billy and Mandy, Grim was my favorite character and used to draw him a lot.

- What artist has most influenced you ?

An artist that has truly inspired my artwork since an early age has been Thomas Herpich, he has worked on adventure time and over the garden wall.

- What is your favorite artwork ?

This piece made by Claude Monet, Arrival of the Normandy Train at the Gare Saint-Lazare. This impressionist painting made me feel like drawing backgrounds was so not bad, I used to dislike drawing backgrounds so much but thinking about them with an impressionist basis helped me a lot to get into them and like landscaping.

- What other fields disciplines have influenced you ?

Jewlery making and sculpture making, are artforms that really inspired me since I have helped me understanding 3D work and the space surrounding it.

- Have you ever made a choice that was influenced by someone’s feedback or critique ?

I mean yeah usually I like to show people my work, and get some reviews based on what I do. Mainly would be stuff out place or wouldn’t make sense for the placing on certain perspectives I work with.

PART 2:

Interview: Le’Andra LeSeur by Ksenia M. Soboleva / BOMB Magazine

What inspired LeSeur ? Compare what motivates you to create meaning.

LeSeur is inspired by color, repetition, process, mainly the world around her and how most of her work explores the coexistence of grief and joy, specially from perspective as a black, queer woman. She had created work during 2017, as an extension of her rage around a lot of the unjust murders of black people in America. The way LeSeur talks about body and language, how we listen and how we speak is how we navigate life and how we understand our body in the process. As long as LeSeur continues to come back to the body as a source, the way she creates art feels limitless.

How does your choice of material, process, aesthetic, content, etc. reinforce your message?

Well I always like to play with the lighting and shadows of my works, either to represent a time or feeling. Since I mostly make digital art based on landscapes, either fiction or non fiction works that connect with the audience in an uncanny world, like maybe it exist or maybe it doesn’t.
