Post 3: Under the Influence & Interview: Le’Andra LeSeur -Maria R.

What inspired LeSeur? Compare what motivates you to create meaning.

LeSeur's art explores the intersection of personal identity, emotional expression, and artistic evolution, drawing on her experiences as a Black, queer woman to navigate themes of grief and joy. My emotional state and personal experiences are the primary drivers of meaning in my work, which tends to explore the psyche.

How does your choice of material, process, aesthetic, content, etc. reinforce your message?

My choice of materials and aesthetics is crucial for conveying the themes in my work. For example, in my painting "Playing with My Organs," I literally placed a violin and painted organs on it. When I exhibited it, there were strong reactions, with some viewers repulsed yet captivated. While opinions varied, the piece showcased my personal aesthetic, which often incorporates an element of eeriness. Some of my work can be cute and bubbly, but I usually love to incorporate a hint of death and chaos.

Who was your most important teacher?

The most important teachers in my life are my mother and life. My mother is a painter, and she’s the reason why I love the art world. I grew up going to her exhibitions, art galleries, art fairs, and art museums. She’s the reason I’m a hoarder of art books. Art is a drug; you can’t have enough of it; it's addicting! Then there’s life. Without the hardships and experiences I’ve had, I wouldn’t want to lose myself in my work. I find solace when I pick up a brush and forget life exists. Sometimes, we need an escape from ourselves and the negativity surrounding us.

Which artist most influenced you?

I will never stop saying this. Mark Ryden. Mark Ryden. Mark Ryden. There are many artists who have influenced me, but he’s my top choice.

What is your favorite artwork?

This is a very difficult question, but I will keep it simple.

“Anatomia” by Mark Ryden

“Serpent” Yoshitaka Amano

“Picture Gallery with Views of Modern Rome” by Giovanni Paolo Pannini

“Rouen Cathedral Facade and Tour d'Alene” by Claude Monet

 What is your favorite museum?

I have yet to explore all the well-known museums, but the answer may change. It will.

Neue Galerie or Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

What book influenced you the most?

The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft

What other creative fields/ disciplines influence you?

Music, poetry, carpentry, 3D animation, visual effects, and video game design. Before I die of old age, I would love to perform in an orchestra as head violinist.

What's the nicest thing anyone has ever said about your art?

They hated it but couldn’t stop staring at my painting. This is the nicest compliment ever! This is how I feel with all my artwork.
