POST 4 - Message/Mission of my work - Abagail T. Serrano

Mission of my Work  - Abagail T. Serrano

My work exists to make the days better. It is not entirely serious, but it should evoke some magic and whimsy. My work is an exploration of emotions, interpersonal relationships, and day to day activities with unfamiliar characters in whimsical settings. My work is not a self portrait visually, but it is figuratively. It is a direct reflection of my life and mental state in one way or another. My work focuses heavily on women, because I am a woman. It is important to me to share and show art from my own perspective especially with my view of the world. The most important thing to convey in my work is that life doesn’t have to be that serious. I want my audience to feel happy. Being sad, concerned, or angry is not something I want to evoke at all in my work. I really want it to be fun and unserious in its message. I believe that my work is something with a touch of magic to look at. If not magical than something that can be a mood brightener. I want my work to be unserious, and fun, and cartoony and not really mull over the horrors in our everyday life in 2025. From conflicts in the middle east and in eastern europe, to the discourse in America, even local issues in New Jersey, it is horrifying to bear witness and that is all that most of us can do. So while all of that is very serious and important to stay informed about, my work strives to break the attention and give the viewer a break from everything. It should generally be fun and nostalgic to the books we read and the shows we watched, have us remember our loved ones and just remember that life truly, day to day, doesn’t have to be that serious.

These friends are from very different lives, but they come together, have a close relationship and spend their free time up in their treehouse. Not everyone thinks they're normal but they don't care, as long as they have one another. This work is one that explores my friendship with my best friend and also exploring childhood innocence with the simple happy thought of how two kids might act with a sack of candy.

This work is inspired by a composition i saw from another artist. On my note of self portraiture, this is more literal, but in concept it is about how safe I am with my partner mentally. I have gone through a lot and having him has been very important to me and very helpful in my mental health journey. Also the idea of being a tiny princess is just fabulous.

This was an Homage parody piece I call “Honora” , the name of the character. I took Ophelia, a truly sad and unfortunate (and beautiful pre-raphaelite painting) and I made it into something silly.

This piece uses color and expression to cover the feeling of being enamored, despite the unusual characters and settings.

These friends are characters that I made with my best friend, and this piece explores their first meeting. I met her when we were 8 years old, and this work relates to some of the innocence we had when we began our journey of friendship together. This doesn't cover everything we've been through, it is just a fun, whimsical composition.

  1. when you state something like "Not everyone thinks they're normal but they don't care, as long as they have one another" about the characters in your artwork, you are talking about a topic of belonging which is essentially a human desire. That always has been and always will be a topic of interest (message / intention / theme) to artists. You may say that you don't mean anything by your work, but as you can see it is impossible to not talk about our human experience. Because that is what we know and what we experience.
