Carrie Mae Weems Interview
Quotes
“Well, you, one of the things that I was thinking about was whether it might be possible to use black subjects to represent universal concerns.” -Carrie Mae Weems
Response
I picked this quote because I think for many artists we tend to think how your work will essentially be ‘digested’ by the audience. There can be a thought process behind how you want your art to be understood but regardless not everyone will have the same understanding or reaction. Weems pointed out her perspective and thought process when realizing the black subject tends to be viewed at face value. How someone’s mindset can build that disconnect instead of being more open and allowing yourself to see the layers and themes she addresses.
“The moment that I think that I have it locked down is the moment in which it flips; you can’t talk about the pros without talking about the cons.” -Carrie Mae Weems
Response
Understanding yourself as an artist isn’t a linear journey is what I got from this. Thinking of a way to contextualize your ideas can be like a push and pull because we are taking those steps simultaneously as the work that’s being developed. Also simply acknowledging something in your work no matter it’s stance, you are also acknowledging whatever may be in the flip side of that.
Gallery Visit 2/22/24
Marc Dennis: I’m Happy You’re Here (located 512 W 22nd St NY)
This was part of a series of floral paintings, I went to go see this with a few friends (shoutout Rocco) and we really enjoyed it. I believe they were all oil paintings, had to stand and look for awhile at each one because there were so many details. This picture I took from my digital camera but there are many random insects and birds.

This one is probably my favorite, the art was displayed on the walls and as you walk around it’s as if you were traveling with the art. As I was trying to figure out what medium was used (I assumed it was wallpaper until I saw thick paint placed around) a door opened. It was camouflage with the wall so you don’t know until you see it open but it made me feel as if I was in Alice in Wonderland. The second room had more saturated colors and print. Connected to that was another small room that displayed a video of the artist and her friend having a discussion as crows.
