Art Talk: Sky Hopinka
How does Sky Hopinka use his medium of choice? What inspired him to use video?
Sky Hopinka is a filmmaker who uses video as his medium of choice. He uses video to explore themes of language, landscape, and identity, combining video footage, audio recordings, and archival material. Hopinka’s inspiration came from his time in Portland, Oregon, where he learned a language native to the Columbia River Basin. This became his starting point, and he began making films with visual manipulation and overlays.
What material/medium/process do you use and how? What inspired you to make your work that way?
I like to explore different materials and see how they can intertwine. I usually start with sketches as blueprints before deciding whether to work digitally or with paint (oil or gouache). Initially, I worked this way because of assignment requirements, but over time, I’ve come to enjoy using a variety of materials. I find that blending different materials adds depth and versatility to my work. If I don’t like it in a certain medium, I can always go to another one and see how it goes.
