POST 8- ART HISTORY: Evan Pierce Blumer

Admittedly, history was never a subject that would stick with me easily. However, last year when i took World Art 2, a period and movement that always stuck out to me was the Dada movement that started in Switzerland and spread to other parts of Europe and even NYC from 1916-1924. This movement was very anti-war and anti-nationalism (a response to the first World War that was going on for the first few years of the movement). In this movement, artists criticized both war and art itself in their world, challenging preconceptions about what is art and how to portray their messages. I was always drawn to this era in art because I, myself, am very anti-war and anti-nationalism. Without mincing words, I think war and nationalism are fucking deplorable and completely disregard what it means to be human. To me, war and nationalism are incredibly selfish and hate-fueled, and I think we have more than enough of that in the world.

Hugo Ball's costume for his "Karawane" poem recital
1916

I picked this art from Hugo Ball to coincide with my piece 'Getting What You're After' because I can relate to what Ball is trying to go for in his performance and feel a connection with my artwork. With Ball's, he was trying to emphasize the absurdity of war and conflict that was going on in the world at the time. With mine, I want to tackle bigotry and hatred head on and let my rage just explode.
