Post 9: Artist Statement and Bio | Ingrid Rivera

 Artist Statement

I am a graphic designer who loves to work with various mediums. Whether it’s from digital art to traditional art. I have also experimented with a bit of woodwork and metal. My work can range from posters, logos, and cookbooks to gouache on Bristol board or oil on canvas. I try my best to keep my work colorful. I enjoy using bright, colorful palettes, especially when doing color studies or recreating artworks. I’m drawn to vibrant and illuminating palettes, two of my big influences are Claude Monet and Cecily Brown. They both are very expressive with their usage of color and bring light and emotion to their pieces.

Most of my work starts in my sketchbook. I like to plan things out before jumping in. But I also leave room to make changes in my work if I’m not happy with the outcome. I enjoy bringing different ideas together and finding a way to connect them. It’s similar to a puzzle, trying to connect the pieces for the bigger picture. Whether I am working digitally or working on a painting, I always want the finished piece to feel complete. I’m also inspired by The Red String Theory, the idea that we’re all connected one way or another. An artist I’m heavily inspired by is Chiharu Shiota, who creates large installations that are immersive and intimate. Her work involves the Red String Theory and is the reason one of the main reasons I look up to her.

Currently, I’m working on a cookbook based on my culture’s holiday traditions. It combines design, storytelling, and food. I hope the outcome of this piece will create a warm and open space for people to learn a little bit about my culture and the importance of this holiday.

  1. I really loved how you embrace mistakes and changes of plans in your work, not sticking to one idea forever, but branching out to different possibilities. I adore that you tie your work back to family and connection- would love to hear more on the red string theory.

  2. I love how you blend so many mediums together in your work there’s such a genuine sense of play and emotion that comes through. Your use of color is super inspiring, and it’s cool how you’re influenced by both Monet and Cecily Brown but still have your own style. The Red String Theory connection is beautiful too it totally makes your work feel more personal and meaningful.
