Artist Statement & Bio (drafts)

Vianel Bonilla - Artist Statement

I am a mixed-media artist, primarily working with Posca markers, but I am always exploring new materials to expand my creative practice. I am drawn to the ways different art forms can complement and enhance each other, and I don’t limit myself to a single medium. Whether I’m working with oil, ink, hot glue, or found objects, I enjoy the process of discovering how diverse materials can come together to form a cohesive, dynamic piece.

My style is deeply influenced by bold, graphic lines and repetitive patterns, inspired by artists like Yayoi Kusama and Roy Lichtenstein. These influences manifest in my work through vibrant colors, energetic repetition, and stylized characters. Additionally, anime plays a significant role in shaping my aesthetic. The exaggerated forms and emotive expressions found in anime characters inspire my own creations, which often reflect my personal experiences, childhood memories, and observations of the world around me.

Rather than starting with a traditional sketch, my creative process begins with a thought or an intuitive idea. I prefer to place my initial concepts directly onto the canvas, allowing the work to evolve organically as I experiment with shapes, colors, and textures. This spontaneous approach gives me the freedom to explore the fluidity of my ideas without being constrained by rigid planning or preconceived notions.

In addition to my passion for creating visual art, I envision transforming my work into a small business, offering prints and other products to share my art with a broader audience. I believe in the limitless potential of creativity, and I embrace the idea that art is not confined to one form or format. My work is a journey of discovery, exploring what happens when various artistic expressions come together, and I remain open to where this exploration will lead.

Vianel Bonilla - Bio

Vianel Bonilla is a Dominican/Puerto Rican artist/painter based in North Bergen, New Jersey. Currently she is pursuing a BFA at New Jersey City University. From an early age being exposed to self expression through art she has used this to create work that is meaningful to not just herself, but hopefully her audience as well. She was heavily influenced by the use of vibrant color and bold outlines of Kusama and Lichtenstein work. Through material exploration she uses the physical body representation to portray female positivity. Her work takes heavy inspiration from anime, pop art, and dark aesthetics.

  2. I like the fact you mention your process and how it can be seen as a spontaneous evolution from start to finish. Mainly because of how it can be seen in your artwork that I've witnessed--the colors, shapes, and composition are unique in each one.
