"...we see in art something that resembles what we know-and, second, that we look with the received understanding that art is necessarily a terrain of defamiliarization: it may take what we see/know and make us look at it in a new way"
I think the beautiful part about art is that viewers get to experience their own interpretation of the visual, and I thinks that's something the artist is open and conscious about. It starts with the viewer's perspective but once the viewer learns about the story and symbolism that an art work carries, it opens a whole new perspective and possible significance. And it's true that art its made to creative awareness, to change minds, to inspire others, to captivate a feeling or an experience, but regardless the intention of the artist, every different audience experiment its own emotions.
"How can we truly see, experience, and appreciate all that may be present in any work of art if our only concern is whether it shows us a positive or negative image?"
I think there's no way to see an art piece in a negative or positive way, what is true is that art provokes in us a challenge to experience new emotions every time. It can tell a story but that is up to our interpretation. The way it engage with the viewer is going to be based in knowledge and free judgment of what the artworks showing despite emotion the artist intended to share. I believe artists intentions are always full of power and meaning.
INTERVIEW NOTES
I really appreciate how the artist is putting out there concepts and statements that the majority of artist had felt before, giving exposure to her experience as a black artist. And how the world made it seem impossible for her, and instead she stayed true to her ideas. And it's really powerful how she didn't intend to change nobodies mind but give her point and experience to only be understood and respected.
This painting by Agnes Pelton "The Fountains" at the MoMA museum called my attention y how it made me feel when I saw it. Even though is an abstract piece, I sensed spiritualism and it was whole mood at that moment. I experience a positive emotion, which was calmess but I bet maye a different viewer could've feel confused and didn't understand that well what concept the painting intended to show.
