Vianel Bonilla
"Im an artist trying to figure out how to do this shit. ... I want to use my time to make art not write. yet I want to hear critics talk about my work in a way that makes sense."
Response:
I appreciate how she was able to be so raw with her responses. I feel as though any time I speak to an artist or someone involved with the arts they seem to have their whole life put together almost like it's all been preplanned. Her responding in this way speaks to me because I feel no matter where you are in life at the end of the day we are all trying to figure ourselves out. Also I feel it's hard to write about art when the piece itself is supposed to speak for itself or you make the piece and think it does speak for itself. I do see the need to write too though because as she said I'd want critics to talk about my work in a way that makes sense and for people that have no knowledge of the piece they wouldn't really be able to.
"You can't talk about the pros without talking about the cons, you can't talk about positives without talking about the negatives, and you can't talk about the truths without talking about the untruths."
Response:
I feel as though this statement taps into the fact that nothing exists on its own. Everything has a counterpoint. In talking about these things it allows us as artists to create work that contradicts the world itself or anything else.
Notes:
The interview felt more like a conversation rather than a back and forth question/ response. She really thinks and questions herself and how she wants her work to be perceived by the audience it's not just random. Like when she mentions her interest with jazz and blues and thought how would that look or how it would be made to show the feeling. She critiqued the historical bias of photography and how it was more suited for white people. Also how it may had been different if the focus was on a different race.
Novado Gallery trip 2.25.25
I had the opportunity to visit Novado Gallery in Jersey City with a couple of friends. Was a little adventure to get there the first gallery we were going to was closed but I'm glad we made it to Novado. It's a cute gallery near 150 Bay Street. The current exhibition they have is called converging realities. It is a group show with artists such as Steve Pearlman, Anne Novado, and Eleazar Sanchez. Although there were also other pieces from different artists as well. Walking through this space was very calming it's not overwhelming and upon entry there were works that captured my eye. Some more than others. The work would leave me to question what the significance might be others were quite literal or easier to understand. The gallery manager informed us the gallery will be showing Jerome China's work within the next couple weeks. Jerome China is currently showing his work at NJCU's visual arts building gallery.
