Creating Meaning: Le’Andra LeSeur by Ksenia M. Soboleva
What inspired LeSeur? Compare what motivates you to create meaning.
Leseur's work is inspired by her existence as a black queer woman and the injustices that her community has faced. She is also inspired by humanity, the kindness and gentleness humans can have, and the need for transformation. Using her body as a form of language (and as a medium), believing “language is something we ingest and regurgitate as we become. How we listen and how we speak is how we navigate life and how we understand our body in the process.” I found this interesting, considering many people often forget to listen to their bodies even though we must listen to them, just as we listen to hers.
Creating meaning is natural in my work, everything has its purpose. I'm inspired to do so because then I can personally connect with my work and become more involved (not mindlessly creating). Then through that, I can have conversations and connect with others while discussing and breaking down the works, learning their perspectives and interpretations, and gathering information and reconsidering meanings from these discussions (constantly learning and changing is good). Meaning creates connection and connection is necessary for human beings.
How does your choice of material, process, aesthetic, content, etc. reinforce your message?
My work often consists of my everyday life or interests, once again, putting pieces of myself into my work, giving it depth. I add texture and try to have fun with it because it's still my work- I want to enjoy creating. That inherently makes it more meaningful. And if it's meaningful, you can connect with it which means you can connect with others (which is the goal).
