POST 3 - LeSeur and Others | Abagail T. Serrano

Abagail T. Serrano

What inspired LeSeur? Compare what motivates you to create meaning.

  • LeSeur is inspired by the world around her. This is specifically molded by the fact that she is a queer, black, woman. The injustices against black people that have happened. She is also deeply connected to her work and the idea of how individuals connect and see one another. Her work is an explanation of her feelings towards the world and an immersive experience to allow those that dare to connect with it. She is inspired by people, and her message is a response to those with alternate ideals.
  • The meaning in my works really comes from the things I view and experience every day as well, but much differently than LeSeur. I like to show characters doing different activities and often show my own blazer feelings about life as it is through them. My motivation to create meaning is simply making my place in the world. I get to tell stories and describe relationships.

How does your choice of material, process, aesthetic, content, etc. reinforce your message?

  • My work and its message has to do with looking at everyday life through a fantastical lens. Doing work digitally and rounding out my characters in a cartoon way allows my work to evoke nostalgia in people that view it. Life doesn’t have to be that serious and my work, while approaching interpersonal relationships and drama, is still made in a silly, digestible way.

  • Is there an experience that influenced you to become an artist?
    • My entire life I have been drawing. So no there isn't a specific moment but just a love abnd a support system that made it possible.
  • Who was your most important teacher?

  • I had so many teachers that have had huge impacts but my middle school art teacher Mrs. Morris, she saw my ability and promise. She encouraged me to start showing up to school early to spend time with her and learn. After this she got me to interview with the New Jersey JCArts program where I met more amazing teachers, that then lead me to college with fantastic professors.

  • What artist as influenced you most?
  • The artist that has influenced me most is probably Julia Lepitit, she is an artist online that works on a channel called Drawfee. Her work is creative and influenced by her time in artschool.
  • What is your favorite artwork?

  • My favorite artwork is The Day Dream by Renoir, the use of color, the expression, and the body language used in the painting are all so beautiful, and it feels like a fantasized form of everyday life which is an important part of my work as well.

  • What exhibition has had the most influence on you?

  • The exhibition that had the greatest impact on me must have been the Van Gogh experience in NYC. The immersive experience surrounded you with color and sound. Igt married Van Gogh's work with movement and music really expressing how art can be thought of and viewed differently.

  • What is your favorite museum?

  • My favorite museum is the museum of natural history. There is a lot of artistry within the way that fossils are recreated, how models are made, and how speculative illustrations are done. While this doesn't reflect much in my own work it is still beautiful to witness.

  • What book has influenced you the most?

  • The Book that has influenced me the most would probably be Anime from Akira to Howl's Moving Castle. This book really picks apart different films and anime, expressing the meanings and movements that caused the shows to be the way they are.

  • What other creative fields/disciplines influence you?

I am an illustrator but I have a love for cinematography in film and music videos. The way that lighting is used on screen is something that greatly influences me as well as video games.

  • Have you ever made a choice that was influenced by someone's Critique or feedback
    • ALL THE TIME. I strongly value my peers and professors opinions. I allow many of my choices to be influenced by others at this stage in my artistic journey, because my work is something I like, but also something that I want others to like and attach to.
  • What advice would you give to an aspiring artist?
I would say to have a hobby outside of the art you plan to pursue. Your art will become something that feels less like a hobby and more like a responsibility. Having a hobby away from that will help you keep that balance and give you the space to be creative in your craft all the time.
