Under The Influence Art and LeSeur-Assignment (Cierrah Kelly)

Under the influence Art Form Interview:

Most influential teacher: The most influential teacher in my life is  professor Dittrich and my high school  art teacher  Ms.Stillwagon and Ms.Drogin. Ms.Stillwagon and Ms.Drogin inspired me and gave me the courage to be myself and not being afraid to push it to the extreme. Professor Dittrich  had really helped me on improving my work and focuses on the students. He is like a mentor you can go to anytime and he will give his honest to God advice in order to help you fix and improve your work.

Which artist has most influenced you: Kehinde Wiley, Takeshi OKazaki, Ilya Kuvshinov, are just the few artists out of hundreds of artist that have inspired me.

what is your favorite artwork: Kehinde Wiley’s “Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alp”. The reason why it’s my favorite artwork cause I have always enjoyed and love Wiley’s work especially the way he includes floral design or a pattern and have historical references in general I inspired to create as much details in pieces and meaning  as he does.

What is your favorite museum: My favorite museum is The Brooklyn Museum and The Met.

What other creative fields/disciplines have influenced you: Other creative fields that have interested me is digital illustration, graphic design, stop motion, music, and animation.

Have you ever made a choice that was influenced by a person’s critique or feedback: Yes I have, hearing others feedback had also helped me on my work cause in my opinion they’re like a taste tester and you’re the chief.

What advice would you give to an aspiring artist: I have a couple of advice to give to aspiring artists. For starters learn the art fundamentals, it seems challenging or not important but it is; especially when it comes to finding your style and who you are. By learning the fundamentals you can twist and bend it to express your creativity.  Secondly, read books and watch films that wasn’t created in the past 20 years, learning about the great grandparents that jumpstarted you favorite genre or helped inspired many is important. Thirdly, learn your art history. Fourth, people are going to give you feedback you don’t want to hear sometimes you need to hear and it can be brutal truth or it can be mean for the sake to be mean; whatever the cause don’t let it discourage you.

LeSeur:

-What inspired LeSeur? Compare what motivates you to create meaning.

-What inspired LeSeur is her experience as a queer black woman and the injustices that happens to black people. Her message is her response to these said issues. What motivates me to create meaning is that women’s rights are constantly being stripped day by day and same with queer rights.

  • How does your choice of material, process, aesthetic, content, etc. reinforce your message?

-The choice of material, process, aesthetic, and content reinforce my message by creating the atmosphere of the theme of my pieces. I mostly focus on ultra masculine and feminine women to focus on queer and feminist issues. I pick a setting that’s a blend between  sci fi fiction that is fantastical but have allegories of todays political issues.
