Vianel Bonilla
Interview questions:
Who was your most important teacher?
I've come across a lot of teachers who have impacted my life. My 4th grade art teacher Mrs. Goldstein was someone who I felt at the time understood me and understood my mental health which is something I needed to continue on in the arts. Secondly in my 2 years at Hudson Laurie Riccadonna who really impacted me and made me feel like an artist at a time I felt like I wasn't enough. She constantly pushed me to be my most authentic self.
Which artist has most influenced you?
Yayoi Kusama. Her work spoke to me in a way I've never felt before. It was the first time in my life I felt like I had a purpose and seeing her work at the time gave me the confidence I needed to believe in my own practice. I was doubting myself until I saw her work and looked into the meaning behind it and looked into her story and how she became a known artist. since then I've followed her work and look to her for inspiration.
What is your favorite artwork?
I wouldn't say I have a favorite artwork as of now I haven't seen something that's touched me so much that I'd remember it. I will say I love
What exhibition had the most influence on you?
I haven't experienced enough exhibitions to say I was highly influenced.
What is your favorite museum?
I've only been to MOMA in my life. I wouldn't say it's my favorite since I still have yet to experience others but it was a great experience.
What book has influenced you the most?
I'm not a heavy reader but there are two books that have stayed with me. The first being "running with scissors" by Augusten Burroughs. Also a book called "A stolen life" by Jaycee Dugard. The books are both memoirs. These books helped me appreciate my life and also helped me be considerate of other people and their feelings. As people say you never know what someone is going through or has gone through so it's important to me to be as kind and understanding as I can be.
What other creative fields/disciplines influence you?
I'm heavily influenced by anime my "style" is always seen as anime although it's not always what I go for but I can see how it reads as such. I love the stories different animes tell I love the crazy character designs which influence my drawings/paintings. I also am influenced by music in a sense that some pieces can only be made by listening to certain songs. Also certain artists make me want to create a piece that can describe how the song makes me feel. I'm influenced by my surroundings as well and just personal interests or objects I collect.
Have you ever made a choice that was influenced by someone's critique or feedback?
My dad is possibly my biggest supporter but also biggest critic. He pushes me to be a better artist and to view things in different ways. So a lot of the time he looks at something I'm making he critiques it and I take it into consideration I don't always alter my work because sometimes I just want to make my point come across in the way it makes sense to me. I guess one would say I'm sort of stubborn.
What's the nicest thing someone has said about your art?
The biggest compliment is being told I've inspired someone to create art as well. I've been told a lot by people that I make them want to make art again and that's all I could ask for. As long as someone can feel something I'm satisfied.
What advice would you give to an aspiring artist?
As cliche as it might sound. Stay true to who you are although you will constantly evolve and become a better version of yourself, remember who you are always don't lose yourself. Stay positive no matter what obstacles get in your way and love what you do. Don't take no for an answer and break the rules don't conform to what someone else might want you to be. Try new things never limit yourself based of fear of failure.
Leseur Interview:
What inspired LeSeur? Compare what motivates you to create meaning.
Leseur was inspired by the body as well as language. She looks within herself and her experiences this allows her to feel like she can create limitless amounts of work.
My recent work has been based of personal battles with my self identity. I also look towards my personal interest and my childhood. It helps me want to create more work that will heal my inner child and hopefully bring a sense of nostalgia to others.
How does your choice of material, process, aesthetic, content, etc. reinforce your message?
I use posca paint markers to create my work so it always ends up looking cartoonish or anime like. I feel like the color palette I use is very nostalgic when it comes to creating some things I feel like as a child things are seen as brighter. I don't necessarily stick to one thing when it comes to making art I usually try to mix different ideas and mediums into one. I don't always have a message behind my work but when I do I make the piece feel very personal to myself. If others can feel it too it's a plus.
