POST 5 - Art on My Mind - Zeyad Elshikh

 Quote 1:

"Art is the one place we all turn to for some measure of freedom."  Bell Hooks

Response:
This quote resonates deeply with the idea that art serves as a space for liberation, both for the artist and the audience. hooks emphasizes that art is more than just a form of expression. It is a means of reclaiming agency and challenging societal norms. In my own work, I see design and branding as a way to create narratives that give voice to overlooked stories. By integrating cultural symbolism and history into my designs, I strive to provide an experience that is both visually compelling and thought-provoking.

Quote 2:
"I am always asking myself: How does my work operate in the world? What does it do?" Carrie Mae Weems

Response:
Weems’ reflection highlights the responsibility of artists to consider the impact of their work. It’s not just about creating something aesthetically pleasing, but about ensuring it has a purpose and resonates with an audience. This aligns with my approach to design, where I focus on creating work that bridges historical narratives with modern aesthetics. Whether through branding or visual storytelling, I aim to craft pieces that evoke emotion, curiosity, and engagement.

Notes on Weems’ Artistic Responses:

  • Weems acknowledges the influence of history, race, and personal experience in shaping her work.
  • She discusses the importance of storytelling in art, using photography as a means to challenge dominant narratives.
  • Her work often functions as a dialogue with the viewer, prompting them to reflect on identity, power, and social issues.
  • Weems believes that artists should always interrogate how their work exists beyond themselves, how it functions in the world and engages with audiences.
