Post 7 - Materials and mediums that inspire my work - Olga Doutkevitch

Olga Doutkevitch, material/medium/process do you use and how? What inspired you to make your work that way?

I use ceramic mediums for my work: various clays, glazes, underglaze paints.

The clay is a very special material: it can be found in every place of the Earth, right under our feet; it is abundant, and so simple; and let the artist to make so much art, 3D, 2D, matt and shiny…

When clay is soft, it is very pliable, it is almost sensual; I can shape it with my hands, squeeze, and pull into any shape. That happens while the clay is still soft. If I wait a little, clay gets drier, not a very soft material anymore, and now I can carve and cut it with tools. If I add a lot of water and some colorants into the same clay – it will become a paint for the ceramic. Or, I might use clays of different colors as paints for my ceramic work. I remember traveling through the states of Uta, Nevada, Arizona, and there I’ve seen mountains of so many colors, I think they are made of various clays of so many colors ! I almost could not believe that what I saw was real: yellow, orange, green, beige mountains, and all these colors are mostly just clays....
