Sky Hopinka

  1.   How does Sky Hopinka use his medium of choice? What inspired him to use video?
Sky Hopinka grew up in a household where his grandmother was a beadwork artist. His mom was a dancer and his dad was a singer. He never really thought too much about fine arts or things like that until his twenties. But as far as creativity, Hopinka's grandmother, brother, mother, and dad were all creative in their own lives. Hopinka was still working through on how connected his family were to him. As he learned his own language, Hopinka thinks that it helped give him a foundation or a structure on how he approach his video work. He wasn't able to look at it critically until years later, but the structure of grammar, the structure of language, all these different rules or approaches to learning language. He could see himself applying those same things to how he approach video. Hopinka was trying to figure out what it was he was interested in and how they're very similar in these ways that aren't immediately obvious.

     2.  What material/medium/process do you use and how? What inspired you to make your work that way?

Since I'm a photographer, the materials I use is my camera, the Canon Mark II, Adobe photoshop, bridge, and light room classic for editing photos, my laptop, and a hard drive to save all of my work. The camera plays the main role for my photographer career. specifically my digital camera. Photographers increasingly choose digital cameras for their convenience, cost-effectiveness, instant feedback, and flexibility in editing and post-processing compared to film cameras. Editing photos play a huge role in my career. Photo editing is important because it allows for enhancing images, correcting imperfections, and expressing artistic vision, ultimately leading to more compelling visuals and improved storytelling. Adobe's strength lies in its industry-leading software suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, which are renowned for their power, versatility, and intuitive interfaces, making them the go-to tools for many creative professionals. Sneaker photography is what got me to shoot constantly because it's a product that I enjoy to collect and show. Sneaker photographers, like myself, are inspired by the unique designs, colors, and cultural significance of sneakers, often using photography to showcase these aspects and tell stories through footwear. Sneakers have become a significant part of pop culture and fashion, and photographers are inspired to capture their cultural impact and the stories they tell. Some photographers view sneaker photography as a form of art, using it to express their creativity and share their unique perspective on the world of sneakers.
