Artist Statement
I am a multimedia artist that works with pencil, charcoal, and digital. The majority of my work is done traditionally although I prefer to color my pieces digitally. It is simple to switch colors and there is no fear of potentially ruining the original artwork if a choice I make is something I disagree with. The main why I choose to use digital only for coloring is because the strokes of my lines appear more precise when utilizing a pencil than a drawing tablet. I would describe my work as being fantastic art. It is a broad genre that encompasses imaginative realism with roots in folkloric, mystical, and mythical art. The ideas for my art are mostly centered around fantasy. It is similar to series such as The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
I enjoy creating work that differs from our ordinary world. Being an imaginative person, I tend to speculate how the world around us would function if subjects such as magic or different humanoid species existed and the impact that they would have. This transfers over to the story aspects of my art. Being able to convey rules that make sense for each world is essential for giving them the illusion of being realistic. This imaginative expression of world building and characters is why I am inspired by anime and manga. Some of the works are rooted in reality with unrealistic elements and others are rooted in unrealistic worlds. One of my influences is Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball series. His series contains subject matter like alien species, anthropomorphic animals, dinosaurs, and futuristic technology. He takes chi, which is a concept of vital energy, and he transforms it into a power that can be utilized by certain characters in fights. It is this type of creativity that I want to depict in my own artwork.
When someone views my work, I want them to be intrigued by the contents. If they find it interesting then it will potentially cause them to express the desire to view more. The worst outcome could be that my artwork is too generic or visually unappealing. It needs to stand out so that it catches eyes of others. I imagine that there will be a certain group of people who will express interest in my fantasy artwork.
