Post 8 - Art History - Carla Herrera

Jackson Pollock, Red Composition, 1946

Abstract Expressionism is an art movement I have always been drawn to. From the mid 20th century, this movement is about spontaneity and expression in a nonobjective focal lens. It is about exploration and total freedom of expression. I feel it is a tool for nonobjective artists to delve deeper into. The possibilities are endless in terms of abstract expressionism and that is the beauty of this art movement. It is a judgement free type of art movement that gives the artist total power.

This freedom is what attracts me to abstract expressionism. Artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Lee Krasner express their true artistic nature without judgement. The individual strokes in their work and color usage are about emotions that are boundless. For example, Jackson Pollock’s Red Composition, which was one of his first abstract paintings he experimented with. Embracing spontaneity and improvisation are the values that shaped Abstract Expressionism, and I believe this is what interests me in this art movement.

Abstract Expressionism is about expressing different experiences in a non-representational way and this is beautiful to me.
