How does Sky Hopinka use his medium of choice? What inspired him to use video
Hopinka’s films are experimental and fragmented, blending video clips, sound, and archival footage. He explores themes like language, place, and identity, while reflecting on the stories and traditions of the Ho-Chunk Nation. Through layered visuals and effects, his work takes on a dreamy, almost surreal quality that invites viewers to explore and interpret it in their own way. Learning Chinuk Wawa inspired Hopinka to structure his art with video. He sees the structure of language and grammar with an approach similar to what he wants to project in his videos.
What material/medium/process do you use and how? What inspired you to make your work that way?
As a graphic designer, my inspiration comes from magazines, creative websites like Pinterest, and other graphic designers' reels. After I do my research and how the branding strategy could be approached and reflected, I start looking for the right typography and color palette. Once I have my references, I start sketching on a piece of paper with a pencil, and then I proceed to digitize my ideas. Everything just starts making sense after that because it's a constant style. I label files and separate them in their right folders so when I deliver them, it's easier for the person who's going to receive them. I proceed to work on the branding proposal presentation, and after I present the project to the client, if they like, before I submit everything, I work on their brand identity guidelines, then I submit all files, with me thank you letter. My preferred programs are Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. For mockups, I use Pacdora, Creative Fabrica, or the Adobe Stock website. What inspired me to work that way was the other freelancers in graphic design I see on social media and some YouTube videos I have watched on how to be organized with projects. I feel like now is so much easier because it's like a routine. And even though some projects still give me a creative block, I think it's part of the process.
Here I'm going to attach a video on how I work most of the time
