Post 1 Introduction - Via Bonilla

"Love for Vianel" : Posca and acrylic on canvas 8"x10" July 2024.
This is a painting I made during a time I was having trouble with my identity. It represents the version of myself who is presented to society and socially acceptable my "main" self. This is one of 5 pieces from a series I named "(Via)nel".

Hello!! my name is Vianel Bonilla although I prefer to be called Via. Im a mixed media artist primarily working with posca. Although I still use other materials to expand my creative process. It's very difficult to stick to one medium when creating because I enjoy the process of seeing how diverse materials come together to create a cohesive, dynamic piece. Im currently in the BFA painting/drawing program at NJCU.

My more current work is more based on personal interests and life experiences. I'd describe my work as dark and creepy, ironically it's filled with color. It's also cute and filled with fantasy. I have a very decorated room which I take inspiration from when creating new works of art. Some artists who have influenced the way I create would be Yayoi Kusama and Roy Lichtenstein. Some instagram artists as well such as Missupacey, SVV.art, and Ink_stasy to name a few. Anime is also a big influence when it comes to creating. Yayois patterns were something I was mesmerized by when I gained knowledge of her work. I loved the refined lines and the look of organized chaos which is how i'd also describe my art. One of the first ever master copies I did was a piece by Lichtenstein I loved the bold outlines his pop art had so I always wanted to include it in my art to me it looked more refined in that way. In my process it all starts with an idea and rather than sketching it in a sketchbook I normally draw directly on my canvas and to let the image organically evolve.

Susan Sontag Quotes

"To collect photographs is to collect the world." - Susan Sontag

This quote stood out to me because that's exactly how I view photographs. I own this view master which has a lot photos from 1940s which makes me feel like I own parts of the world.

"A photograph passes for incontrovertible proof that a given thing happened." - Susan Sontag

Whenever I photograph my work I always feel the need to prove that it's my work. If I post on instagram, TikTok, or Facebook. I usually try to post the process of me creating because a lot of people like to steal artwork and that's something that I get very scared of.

Some of my work >.< !!

"Cut from the same cloth" : Posca and Acrylic on cavas 12"x12" November 2024.
This piece represents the two ways I view myself. On the left the base form of myself fitting into society. On the right is the inner version of me that I'd wish to look like if life accepted the supernatural.

"In the world of V" : Pastel on grey paper 40"x 60" May 2024.
This piece is literally my personality and interests captured in one self portrait.

"Inner soul" : Posca/Acrylic on canvas 10"x10" July 2024.
This piece is the fifth piece of my series (Via)nel. It's a tribute to my comfort anime soul eater but also it's my take on how I view yin and yang.

"Melanie Marinez" : Posca and hot glue on watercolor paper 12"x16" May 2024.
This piece was a tribute to Melanie Martinez who is one of my favorite music artists and her new album at the time called portals.
