- What inspired LeSeur? Compare what motivates you to create meaning.
Inspiration for LeSeur seems to be using her body as a medium, language as part of oneself and understanding the act to become everyday. She uses colors to imply meaning and symbolism as well as using the audience to give it interpretation. Also Silhouttes, outlines, shadow given her the opportunity to change the message in the piece as its being watched and analyzed. LeSeur seems to have a very strong identity in her work and herself and as Black queer women artist in American the experiences between pain, grief and death are as important to the artists because of how well they understand these factors.
I have found myself making pieces that bring the personal, emotional and rawness of reality together. As I start projects I tend go from there or sometimes I already have the intention I am going for. As a photographer my subjects are sometimes created by me so everything is intentional, as I have mentioned before those are just visions I tend to come up with sometimes the meaning comes after.
- How does your choice of material, process, aesthetic, content, etc. reinforce your message?
I have a very specific aesthetic that I have developed throughout time, meaning that if you one sees my work anywhere they most likely know it is one of mine, but that also applies to other artists. I do enjoy the process of bringing a vision to life makes everything else more understanding for me, but there isn't something I have not made without the pre production part, and I just think the process its as important as the result.
Interview Questions
Is there an experience that influenced you to become an artist?
When I was in high school I started documenting my friends and the fact that we will sleepover almost every day. It was only one small room with like five guys and a girl, since they will always do the same I started to do something different and began to take pictures and editing them was when I started to see what I could actually do to photos. My first approach to art was fashion, we would always go thrifting and I would photograph our outfits and that also brought my encounter with the camera, that would be our routine, that is why I also I enjoy styling my subject matter as much as I can.
What was your most important teacher?
I was always something for my english teachers in high school, as they would always read me and tell me how I was in their eyes. That made me see them a different way. They would always say something about my personality at the end of each year, and I always found that weird but also cool because that would make me question myself to find out what they actually meant. That has stayed with me until now.
Have you ever made a choice that was influence by someone’s else feedback?
Yes I feel like I do take constructive criticism as a plus but also react to it my own way. I am very specific about tones, so I do not like when someone wants to say something but their tone is not respectful. But yes I always take criticism and feedback in consideration to changes.
What is your favorite artwork?
I do not think I have a favorite, it varies for me.
What artists have most influenced you?
Robert Mapplethorpe
Davide Sorrenti
Patti Smith
Rita Indiana
What exhibition had the most influenced on you?
I went to the guggenheim once and I didn’t know what was up that day, and then I saw a whole Mapplethorpe exhibition and my perspective changed a lot, I will always cherish that moment because it was so unknown for me at the time. I knew about it but not that much.
What book has influenced you the most?
I remember reading a street car named desire twice in high school and I would always read Blanche out loud, it was my favorite character. I would love to breakdown the scenes and really find out what was wrong with her, it took me a while to understand. Many photography books as well I just can name all of them but sexual ballad by nan goldin is there too.
What advice would you give to an aspiring artist?
To always keep making work and never stop. If this is your calling then everything else will work out.
