POST 5 - Art on My Mind - Ingrid Rivera

Quote 1:

“A vision, a journey through time-past, present, and future-to unravel connecting threads is ever-present in your work.” - Bell Hooks

Response:

This statement by Bell Hooks is beautiful. She explains how interconnected time and experiences are and how they reflect on our lives and art. Hooks discusses how Carrie Mae Weems’s photography work is more than just images; her photography connects the threads between personal and collective experiences.

“Home for me is both mysterious and mythic- mythic-the known and the unknown” - Carrie Mae Weems.

Quote 2:

Response:

This statement by Carrie Mae Weems captures how complex the place we call “home” is. Weems discusses how she started searching for her “home” by looking into her family’s past, wanting to understand where she came from. The “known” part is her family and their stories. The “unknown” part is about her past and how it all ties into the bigger picture.

Notes:

  • “In Exile,” Weems shows black people in the diaspora, meaning displaced or like they don’t belong in one place

  • Home is not a specific place but something that is always changing

  • There are layers of history in Weems’s work. She shows how people’s lives are made up of layers of different histories and experiences

  • Her family moved from the South (Mississippi) to the North, which impacted her, and it is a big part of her identity

  • Hooks points out how critics often focus too much on race rather than the important themes of gender, power, and desire (The Kitchen Table series)

  • Weems discusses how she wants to use black subjects in her work to represent universal concerns similar to how white subjects are used in Hollywood movies

This interview with Jessica Walsh is helpful to my work and work that involves themes around connection and fate. She also shares how she tackles complex themes within graphic design. : https://blog.readymag.com/an-interview-with-jessica-walsh/

Jessica Walsh is a designer who does bold and colorful designs that often tell a personal or conceptual story. In the interview, Walsh talks about balancing personal design projects and client projects. Walsh believes good design is more than just looking nice; it should make people feel emotion. Walsh prioritizes and encourages being bold and trying new things, especially when starting out. Walsh sees design as a way to share ideas and start conversations.

Go to an Art Exhibition (MoMA)

I went to MoMA on Thursday as a class field trip in the morning and kept the ticket. I went again on Saturday. Here are some pictures I took of pieces that I liked:

Mohammed Sami, The Execution Room, 2022, Acrylic on linen

Claes Oldenburg, Giant Soft Fan, 1966-67, Vinyl filled with foam rubber, wood, metal, and plastic tubing

Ester Hernández, Sun Mad, 1982, Screenprint

Dorothea Tanning, Dogs of Cythera, 1963, Oil on canvas

Pablo Picasso, Girl with a Mandolin, 1910, Oil on Canvas

These five pieces stood out to me the most. They left a lasting impression on me. I found myself looking back. My favorite piece was Girl with a Mandolin by Pablo Picasso from the Cubist era. It was a great experience. I took the time to visit all five floors and was able to capture a nice picture of Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. I also went to the gift shop and bought a book of 642 tiny things to draw.
