Sky Hopinka
What inspires him to use video? What is his medium of choice?
Sky Hopinka came from a creative family and later in life this was something that pushed him to become an artist. During his time learning Chinuk Wawa it influenced him to create the body of work that he’s created. As he said he makes videos because it’s what he wants to make. The imagery he uses is based on conversations he wants to have. During his creative process he goes through researching the history of these cultures and making sure that it’s respectful to the community that owns them. He uses landscapes that he finds interesting. When he watches his videos back he’d sometimes cringe. Then he would often ask for other people’s opinion to critique his work and he found that to be very important. His work will go through about 20 rounds of edits as he thinks of repercussions he might face and what maybe the best approach of showing his work. He believes when he feels excited and nervous at the same time that’s when he’s on the right track.
What material/medium/process do you use and how? What inspired you to make your work the way you do?
When it comes to creating my material and mediums all vary. I would primarily use acrylic paint. I started to use Posca based on the boldness of the colors and it became my main medium. There are often times i'd like to attempt to make work that is 3-D. So I would use materials such as hot glue or installation foam. I take inspiration from shows, movies, family, and personal interests. I used to make a lot of monochromatic work, but I then found a love in creating more bold and colorful art works. The reason I do use these bold colors is because I feel it stays true to the child version of myself which I will forever believe is necessary in personal growth. I make work that makes me happy in hopes it'll make others happy and bring others back to the feeling of nostalgia. I do plan to touch upon other things that have affected me in my life. Yet as for now my process is think of an idea sketch it onto a canvas or paper paint it and post.
